How A&O Budget compares
The best-known budget apps, side by side on price and the features that matter to a household. Where we fall short, we say so.
The short answer
- Price. A&O Budget is free during early access. The apps it competes with on features cost $72 to $109 a year.
- Privacy. A&O Budget never asks for your bank password. Your budget is locked in your browser before it reaches our server, so we can't read it. Most big-name apps connect to your bank through a third-party data service. Free apps have to make money somehow, often from ads, offers or paid upgrades. A&O Budget has no ads and will never sell your data.
- Planning ahead. A&O Budget plans your checking payday by payday, months or years ahead, with each bill paid on its due date. Of the apps here, only Simplifi comes close, and it looks 12 months ahead.
- Convenience. This is where we fall short. Every paid app here pulls your bank transactions on its own. With A&O Budget you download a bank file, which takes about a minute. There's no app-store app. It runs in your browser, with a phone layout you can put on your home screen.

Where A&O Budget stands out
Know the date before money runs short
Every bill lands on its due date in the paycheck that covers it. Safe to spend shows the first day your checking would drop under the amount you pick, months or years ahead.
Free, with nothing for sale
The best-known budget apps cost $72 to $109 a year. A&O Budget is free during early access, with no ads and no upsells.
Your bank password stays with you
The app never asks for it. You download a file from your bank, and your budget is locked so only you can open it. Not even A&O can read it.
Debt and your plan in one place
Compare Avalanche, Snowball and your current pace. When a card is paid off, its payment drops out of future months.
